再见、保重、告辞、慢走、后会有期……中国人讲究礼貌、委婉,注重人情,道别时也往往重在关切、敬重。不同的道别方式,适用于不同的场合。想要了解地道的道别方式?快来一起学习一下吧!


“再见(zàijiàn)、保重(bǎozhònɡ)、告辞(ɡàocí)、慢走(mànzǒu)、后会有期(hòuhuìyǒuqī)”... The Chinese people are generally polite, reserved, and empathetic in saying goodbye, often focusing on showing care and respect to the other party. Different ways of saying goodbye are used for specific occasions. Let’s take a look at some idiomatic expressions.

再见

中文里最常用的道别语之一,可用于多种场合。


One of the most commonly used farewell expressions in Chinese; applicable to many occasions.


例 | Eg.

1) 

(电视节目末尾)今天的节目就到这里,感谢您的收看,再见。

(Ending a TV show) That’s all for today’s show. Thank you for watching. Goodbye!

2) 

(挂断电话)那就这样,谢谢你,再见。

(Ending a phone call) That’s it, thank you. Goodbye!

3) 

(下课后)老师:同学们,再见!学生:赵老师,再见!

(Ending a class) Teacher: Goodbye, everyone! Student: Goodbye, Mr./Ms. Zhao!

bye-bye


年轻人道别的方式,轻松、随意,由英文的bye bye音译而来。


Used by the young people to bid farewell; relaxed and casual; transliteration of bye-bye in English.

  

例 | Eg.

(聚会结束)我先走啦,拜拜。

(At the end of a party) I’ve got to go, bye-bye.



huíjiàn/huíliáo

回见/回聊

see you later/talk to you later


当对话双方比较熟悉时可以用这种道别方式。面对面道别时可以用“回见”(多见于北京地区),电话或网聊结束时可以用“回聊”,传达希望再见面、再聊天的意思。


This expression can be used when the two parties of a conversation are familiar with each other. “回见(huíjiàn)” is used for face-to-face scenarios (mostly used in Beijing), while “回聊(huíliáo)” is used at the end of a phone or online conversation, to express the wish to meet or chat again.


例 | Eg.

A: 我有事先走啦!

A: I have got to run!

B:好嘞,回见啊!

B: OK, see you later!

wǒ xiān zǒu / chè le

……,我先走/撤了

…, I’ve got to go/ I must be going


通过表达离开的意愿来道别,通常前面会加上一两句铺垫,让语气更为委婉、周到。


Bidding farewell by voicing the need to take leave is usually cushioned with a sentence or two, to make the tone more tactful and thoughtful.


例 | Eg.

1)   

说明自己离开的原因

Explaining the reason for taking leave

家里还有事,我先撤了。

I’m needed back home, so I have to go.

2)   

关心对方

Showing care for the listener

时间不早了,就不打扰你了,我先走了。

It’s getting late. I hate to intrude upon you any further. I’ve got to go.

3)   

 叮嘱对方

Reminding the listener

你别忘记把早餐吃了,我先走了。

Remember to have your breakfast. I’ve got to go.

4)   

建议对方

Offering advice

你可以在这里多逛逛,我先撤了。

Take your time and hang around here some more. I’ve got to go.

今天真是谢谢你,我先走了。

下次/有空一起……

Let’s…together next time/ sometime

 

道别时,也可以通过表达邀请以示友好,一般无需进一步讨论具体的时间、地点。


Extending invitation is also used to say goodbye. Generally, there is no need to specify the time or place.


例 | Eg.


下次一起钓鱼!

Let's go fishing together next time!


有空一起吃饭!

Let’s dine together sometime!

…jiàn

(具体时间/地点)+见

see you (at specific time/place)


如果约定了下一次见面的时间、地点,分开时可以用再提一次见面的时间、地点的方式道别。


If the time and place have been determined for the next meeting, you can reiterate them when saying goodbye.


例 | Eg.

1) 

(具体时间)我先走了,咱们周五见!

(with a specific time) I’ve got to go. See you on Friday!

2) 

(具体地点)到时候电影院见!

(with a specific location) See you at the cinema then!

告辞

farewell


非常正式的道别语,古今通用,多用于客人向主人辞别时。


Very formal, used in ancient and modern times; mostly for guests taking leave of their hosts.


例 | Eg.

(客人向主人辞别)今天多谢您的款待,告辞!

(Guest bidding farewell to the host) Thank you for your hospitality today and goodbye!

mànzǒu & qǐnɡ liúbù

慢走VS请留步

take your time, no need to hurry/ 

I wouldn’t want to overstay my 

welcome. I can see myself out.


中国主人在客人离去时喜欢说“慢走”,客人则不断对主人说“请留步/别送了”,表达关切、友好之意。


The Chinese host often says “慢走(mànzǒu)” (literally means “mind how you go”) when the guest is about to leave, and the guest says in response, sometimes repeatedly, “请留步(qǐnɡ liúbù)” (literally means “don’t bother to come any further and see me out”) as a token of care and friendship.


例 | Eg.

(小李去小王家做客结束,该离开了)

(Xiao Li is about to leave Xiao Wang’s house after a visit)

小王:慢走啊,我送送你。

Xiao Wang: Take your time, no need to hurry. Let me see you out.

小李:请留步,不用麻烦了。

Xiao Li: Thanks, but I wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome. I can see myself out.

常联系

keep in touch


短期无法再见面时,常用“常联系/保持联系/有空给我打电话”等道别。


“常联系(chánɡ liánxì)/保持联系(bǎochí liánxì)/有空给我打电话(yǒukònɡ ɡěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà)” is used to bid farewell, where an encounter is not expected for some time.


例 | Eg.

你去了广州之后,咱们要常联系啊!

After you go to Guangzhou, please do keep in touch!





zàihuì / hòuhuìyǒuqī

再会/后会有期

meet you again someday


即将长久分别时的道别语,侧重于表达希望再见面。


Used when a prolonged departure is expected; emphasizing the hope for seeing each other again.


例 | Eg.

(即将毕业)今天一别,不知道什么时候还能再相见,我们后会有期!

(prior to graduation) As we part ways today, I don’t know when we will meet again. See you!

保重/珍重

即将长久分别时的道别语,侧重于表现关切之情。


Used when a prolonged departure is expected; emphasizing care for the other party.

I don’t know when we will meet again. Please do take care!

在网络社交平台上,中国人喜欢使用表情包来道别,且不同年龄层使用的表情包风格不一。


Used to say goodbye on social networking platforms; can vary in style for different age groups.




88/白白

bye-bye


在网络社交平台上,中国人也常用谐音的数字“88”和故意错用的汉字来道别,以示随意、轻松、可爱。


On social networking platforms, the number “88” and Chinese characters “白白” homophonic  to bye-bye are often used to say goodbye, to add a casual, relaxed and cute touch.

1. When you are about to take leave of a Chinese friend after a visit to his/her house and she/he says “慢走(mànzǒu)”, you may say:


A . Thank you, I have had a great time today!

B.  Thank you for your hospitality. I wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome. I can see myself out.

C.  No, no, I still have other appointments, and I have to rush.


2. When a Chinese friend looks at his watch at a party, and says, “It’s getting late.” He probably means that:


A.  He wants to stay a little longer.

B.  He wants to leave.

C.  He is just showing off a new watch.


3. When a Chinese friend says “Let’s have a drink together some time”, you may say:


A.  No problem. Let’s do that sometime.

B.  I'm free now; let's go.

C.  I don't drink. How about tea?
